Peruanos

Peru is a country that narrates its diversity in parts. But this physical multiplicity contains experiences of people who hardly recognize each other; precisely because of their diversity. Or it does not even remember that there can be as many Perúes as people and spaces contained under certain geopolitics.

Peru’s peoples, cultures, and landscapes struck me in 2004 and have since been developing a lyrical visual document that shows intimate, honest portraits as a way of looking at each other and breaking barriers. The camera became my excuse to approach people and to empathize with them. For the past 20 years I have travelled Peru’s 25 regions and have been privileged to go into other people’s lives, even if for a short time.

This work, Peruanos is a photo-essay with a poetic narrative that reflects an honest approximation to people. I approach with respect and receive honest responses. I can begin to see who we are and that we come from a profound place in humanity.

A powerful photograph doesn’t just represent the person or the place it depicts; it evokes a deeper reflection in the viewer, inviting them to consider their own existence. By establishing intimacy, humanity, and presence in my work, my images become a reflection of my own relationship with the world.

The camera becomes a tool to bring order, to understand, and to communicate with our surroundings. It becomes a tool for empathy.

Peruanos (ES)

El Perú es un país que narra su diversidad por partes. Pero esta multiplicidad física contiene experiencias de gente que apenas se reconoce entre sí; precisamente, por lo diverso. O ni siquiera recuerda que pueda haber tanto Perúes como personas y espacios contenidos bajo cierta geopolítica.

Las gentes, culturas y paisajes de Perú me impactaron en 2004 y desde entonces he venido desarrollando un documento visual lírico que muestra retratos íntimos y honestos como una forma de mirarnos y romper barreras. La cámara se convirtió en mi excusa para acercarme a la gente y empatizar con ella. Durante los últimos 20 años he recorrido las 25 regiones de Perú y he tenido el privilegio de asomarme a la vida de otras personas, aunque sea por poco tiempo.

Este trabajo, Peruanos es un foto-ensayo con una narrativa poética que refleja una aproximación honesta a las personas. Me acerco con respeto y recibo respuestas honestas. Puedo empezar a ver quiénes somos y que venimos de un lugar profundo de la humanidad.

Una fotografía impactante no se limita a representar a la persona o el lugar que retrata; evoca una reflexión más profunda en el espectador, invitándole a plantearse su propia existencia. Al establecer intimidad, humanidad y presencia en mi trabajo, mis imágenes se convierten en un reflejo de mi propia relación con el mundo.

La cámara se convierte en una herramienta para poner orden, comprender y comunicarnos con nuestro entorno. Se convierte en una herramienta de empatía.
